About Me

Hello, I am a 4th year student in Photography, Film and Imaging at Edinburgh Napier. I am specifically working on the concept of phototherapy and autism and how the role of photography supports children and young people. The Final Year Degree Show is from 26th May for a week. My deadline for this project is 15th April, so any advice would be much appreciated! Ideally I would like to broadcast (with permission from the families) my expereience and to find out whether phototherapy could form a side income along side a teaching assistant job.

I began this project since summer 2010. My interest began when I was a teachers assistant in a mainstream school that have a boy with Aspergers Syndrome. I have dyslexia so have some understanding of how people can struggle through education.

I am volunteering at The Yard, in Edinburgh and plan to work with my project beyond graduation. My aim is to work with the families that are interested in what I am doing and to help there children to get from A to B through the use of photography. I am already working one to one with a young adult and that is going tremendously well, but I would appreciate any advice.

About Me

Ex Royal Australian Air Force, Vietnam veteran, qualified teacher and workplace trainer and have suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder officially since 1995. I hold a Bachelor of Administration degree, a Teaching Diploma and a Diploma of Photojournalism.

I am about to enrol in a research Phd in Therapeutic Photography through Griffith University in Brisbane after discovering the therapeutic benefits of photography when teaching people with a disability (from mild intellectual to severe Cerebral Palsy and non verbal autism), mental illness or at risk adolescents.

I am of the firm belief that therapeutic photography was the catalyst in helping me learn to cope with PTSD. I am also looking forward to sharing information with people who understand the therapeutic qualities that photography can provide.
